In J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, we learn a little bit more about Bilbo and his coming to own the magical ring that, in the end, was a power of evil. In The Hobbit we are introduced to some exciting characters and a whole different adventure from the one that Frodo takes many years later.
The Hobbit is one of my most favorite books to read. While The Lord of the Rings trilogy is also excellent, there was just something about The Hobbit that makes me want to pick it up right this minute and read it again.
The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins as a younger man. Like all hobbits, Bilbo would sit in his home, smoke his pipe and simply enjoy himself. But, when the wizard Gandalf comes barging into his life, everything changes for Bilbo. Suddenly, he’s sent on an adventure with a band of dwarves.
This adventure, while exciting, was not absent of danger. Bilbo nearly crosses the line to death several times. But it is on this fateful journey that Bilbo will find a golden ring…and, as it turns out, not just any golden ring. But we’re not supposed to know that yet….
The Hobbit was and always will be one of my favorite stories. Bilbo having his own story was so great! And it gives you a little glimpse of how the quiet hobbit wasn’t always so restless before Gandalf gave him ‘a little nudge out of the door’. 😉
